Chinua Achebe in his novel, Things Fall Apart, writes in a way that Erich Auerbach would describe as biblical style. Biblical style involves suspense, biblical allusions, the ambiguity of purpose, and gaps leading to interpretation. Achebe uses this biblical style to focus on the downfall of Okonkwo, the main character. One passage that exemplifies this biblical style is in Part One with Okonkwo in the sacrifice of his adopted son, Ikemefuna. Okonkwo kills Ikemefuna out of fear of what the other men in his clan will think if he doesn’t kill his adopted son. The village wants sacrifice Ikemefuna to fulfill the promises of their god, the Oracle because Ikemefuna was exchanged from another village to keep the peace. The village elders tell†¦show more content†¦This unexpected shift in Okonkwo’s behavior and leads the reader and to question what Okonkwo will do with this conflict. Will Okonkwo demonstrate his strengths and slay his adopted son or will he save Ikemefuna from getting killed? This relates to what Biblical style brings according to Erich Auerbach, as we see suspense on what Okonkwo will do with the situation of choosing either tradition or family. Language and details of this passage echo references to the biblical accounts of Abraham and Isaac. By cutting down his son in the face of fear with a machete, we see that Okonkwo is looking to preserve his faith in his culture by adhering to tradition. From this passage, we already see allusions to the binding of Isaac from the Bible. Both stories show a strong relationship between father and son. Like Okonkwo wanting to stick to values, Abraham wants to keep God’s promise of multiple descendants in exchange for loyalty. Abraham puts God’s commandments above his personal feelings and almost sacrifices his son until he is stopped by an angel. Okonkwo looks to show loyalty to the village and preserve tradition by sacrificing his adopted son. Okonkwo, unlike Abraham, actually kills his son. Although they both have their differences the sacrifice of Ikemefuna definitely alludes to the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac. Throughout this course, I have studied and participated in various methods of research. There were some methods I loved, some that I thought were useful, but they had their limitations, and a few that I did not particularly enjoy. Let’s start one of the methods that I enjoyed the most, direct observation. I used direct observation for the eating observation assignment. I first thought that I would be very uncomfortable using this method, but once I was practicing it I did not feel uncomfortable. I think this method is very useful since people act like themselves when they believe no one is watching. This allows researches to collect accurate data without the worry that the data could be skewed. Since my participant did not know that he was being observed, he felt comfortable is his surroundings to act like himself. I do like this research method and I would use it again, however there is a down side to the method. Since you cannot talk to you’re participants you then ha ve to make your own conclusions, which may not always be accurate. This problem also comes up with systematic observation. Systematic observation was a method that I did not particularly enjoy. I found that there were too many flaws with the method, like the one previously stated. Huckleberry Finn should be banned from schools. There are several issues in the novel that schools should not permit their students to learn about and study. These issues are extreme racism, Huck questioning the rules of society, and teaching bad morals. Throughout Huckleberry Finn, Huck is constantly questioning the rules of his society. One example is when Huck says, â€Å"The widow rung a bell for supper, and you had to come to time. When you got to the table you couldn’t go right to eating, but you had to wait for the widow to tuck down her head and grumble a little over the victuals, though there warn’t really anything the matter with them. † When he is stating this, he believes that the rules in the society he lives in are petty and useless. If students are allowed to read this, they may begin to think that it is okay to question the rules that our government have set and possibly not follow them because they think they are petty or useless. The final reason that Huckleberry Finn should be banned from schools is that Huck teaches bad morals for the students who have to read this novel. Instead of following the rules of the society he has grown up with, he uses made up rules of Tom Sawyer and doesn’t question them. â€Å"So Tom got out a sheet of paper that he had wrote the oath on, and read it. It swore every boy to stick to the band, and never tell any of the secrets,† This quote gives an example of the rules that Tom Sawyer set that Huck began to adopt. This band was set up in a way that it seemed like a club or a gang. Students may read this and begin to think that because they do not believe what the rules of society are, that it is okay to join a club to rebel and have their own set of rules. Therefore, Huckleberry Finn should be banned from all schools. The issues that just have been discussed should be taken into consideration.
